About the Islands

Vestmannaeyjar is an archipelago off the south coust of Iceland. It takes only about 35 minutes with a ferry from Landeyjar, south coast to get to the island. The archipelago consists of 15 islands and about 30 rocks and skerries but there is only one inhabitat island; Heimaeywith about 4700 inhabitats.

The Volcanic eruption

In 1973 an volcanic eruption occurred in Vestmannaeyjar which destroyed many buildings and forced the inhabitats to move to the mainland for many months. Approximately one fifth of the town was destroyed and you can still feel the warmth of the lava when you touch it.

How to get there?

The easiest and cheapest way to get to Vestmannaeyjar is with the ferry Herjólfur. During the summer and often in the winter it runs from the harbor Landeyjahöfn and only takes about 35 minutes. You can also fly from Reykjavík with Eagle air which takes about 30 mintues.

Vestmannaeyjar is one of the largest Puffin colonies in the world. These cute penguin-like birds arrive in late April to Vestmannaeyjar to breed and leave us again in early automn to go spend autumn and winter out on the open sea. Vestmannaeyjar is the perfect place to spot puffins.
