Local Guide to Westman Islands

My name is Auður and I live in the beautiful Westman Island. Im married and have three kids. I am a nurse and I just love my job, working at the hospital.  I also love my Island and meeting people, so me and my husband started a travel agency. We really wanted people to have their best experience here. So if you only have one day on the Island what should you do?  I really want to give you some hints what you can do here on the Island and to make your perfect day.

Skansinn

The most common way to get to the Island is with the ferry. It only takes thirty-five minutes to sail over from Landeyjahöfn. One advice from me, go outside on the ferry when it is sailing into our harbour.  The sight is so magnificent, the beautiful landscape, the mountains and Skansinn is the best welcome… 🙂

Taking the ferry you have to travel to the south part of Iceland. We have busses and car rentals. You can also fly straight from Reykjavík. That takes only 25 minutes. You can also take a flight from the south part of Iceland if you are already there or have a car.  That takes only six minutes to fly over.

The islands are an archipelago of 15 islands and about 30 skerries and lie on the mid -Atlantic ridge.

The islands are formed by eruptions over the past, where the oldest part is 40.000 years old, and its volcano system consists of dozens of volcanoes both above and below the sea.

The main island is biggest and is the only inhabited island although six smaller islands around have single hunting cabins. Westman Islands came to international attention in 1973 when an eruption on the island destroyed many buildings and forced the people to evacuate the island for months.

Rest of this blog is coming soon 🙂

Last summer were invited to a unique and a stand out wedding. It took place in Álsey, that is one of our small islands  around Westman Islands.
